Ahead of Hillary Clinton's formal announcement, her top aide confirmed Sunday afternoon that she is running for president.

"I wanted to make sure you heard it first from me – it's official," John Podesta wrote in an email to Democratic members of Congress and chiefs of staff.

"She is hitting the road to Iowa to start talking directly with voters. There will be a formal kickoff event next month, and we look forward to seeing you there," Podesta wrote.
